One thing all Tottenham fans will be keeping an eye on once
football finally returns is where exactly Tanguy Ndombele fits into Jose
Mourinho's plans.
The Frenchman has not lived up to his huge price tag this season
and the head coach and his staff have a huge job on their hands as they look to
get him back to his best form.
Ndombele has shown flashes of his undoubted quality but
unfortunately his good performances have been followed by some woeful displays,
including in the last Premier League game against Burnley.
Mourinho didn't pull any punches in his assessment of his
performance at Turf Moor and now it's down to the player to prove his worth and
show what he can do on a consistent basis.
Spurs have some player on their hands once everything comes
together but they have to find a way to unlock his true potential.
Key to Ndombele finding his form may be starting him alongside a
defensive midfielder in the middle of the park.
Mourinho has always had a holding player in his most successful
sides but it is something he has been lacking at Spurs since replacing Mauricio
Pochettino at the helm in November.
Eric Dier was immediately restored to midfield before later
returning to defence and confirming that his future lies there, with Victor
Wanyama allowed to depart at the start of the year after failing to recapture
the form from his debut season because of injury.
Well, Mourinho may have the answer to his Ndombele dilemma right
in front of his eyes in N17.
Spurs fans have long called for Juan Foyth to be pushed forward
and given an opportunity as a holding midfielder because of his ability on the
ball.
Not included in a Premier League matchday squad or playing a
single minute in any competition since his error at Norwich City just after
Christmas, the Argentine's future is up in the air ahead of the summer transfer
window.
Just this week his agent spoke out about the defender and
claimed he doesn't think the player has a future under Mourinho but they have a
"pending talk" where his current situation will be discussed.
Although a top-class holding midfielder will be high up on the
head coach's priority list this summer as he looks to see a dramatic
improvement in his team, the fact he will have limited funds to play with in
the transfer market may mean he has to go without.
Mourinho may have to get creative with the players already at
his disposal and a change in position for Foyth could work wonders and save him
some money in the process.
Juan Foyth has not featured for Tottenham since his
mistake at Norwich at the end of December
It wouldn't exactly be a new position for the player either as
he previously played in the anchorman role as a youngster during his time in
Estudiantes' academy.
Speaking to football.london in
an exclusive interview last year, Foyth was asked about playing in midfield due
to his attributes on the ball.
"I don't know [if it's a future role for me]. Perhaps the
technical team, if they see that it's something they're thinking about, but I
wouldn't know," he admitted. "If they want me to play in any position
I will do it."
While there have been a few mistakes from the player when he has
played, which you could perhaps put down to his lack of match action, he is
excellent in possession but perhaps far too cool on the ball in defence for
most people's liking.
That's why a move into midfield could suit him down to the
ground,
A player with great technique and one who can find his way out
of the tightest of situations, his defensive qualities coupled with his ability
on the ball makes him the perfect man to sit alongside Ndombele and let him do
what he does best.
The ex-Lyon man is at the top of his game when he's pushing upfield with
the ball and having Foyth next to him doing the dirty work would allow him to
have a big influence in the final third.
Foyth is far from the finished article and the last thing Spurs
want to do this summer is let him go and see him flourish elsewhere.
The mistakes in his game can be ironed out and Mourinho and his
coaching staff can also work with him on his positional discipline to ensure
that he becomes the defensive midfielder that they require.
Spurs have to find a way to get the best out of Ndombele if they
are to challenge at the top once again and Mourinho may after all have the
answer right in front of him in north London.
