Bayern thought they had gone ahead after 18 minutes when Thomas Müller poked home from close range, but he was in an offside position from Serge Gnabry's initial header towards goal. Lewandowski stepped up against fellow Pole Rafal Gikiewicz and slotted his spot-kick home for his 26th league goal of the season.
- The game continued in its even state into the second half, with Leon Goretzka going close to a second goal for Bayern, while Grischa Prömel sent a half-volley wide across goal at the other end. Hansi Flick's troops, though, maintained control of the game while keeping composed enough to not force themselves forward. Top Union scorer Sebastian Andersson came on with 20 minutes to play. Gnabry had a pair of chances to put the game to bed, but it was Pavard who did the job by heading home from a Joshua Kimmich corner. Neuer made sure of his clean sheet with a late save from Felix Kroos as Bayern restored their four-point cushion at the top of the Bundesliga table, ahead of Borussia Dortmund and the chasing pack.
